Bring in the most disagreeable, difficult and challenging people

By Steve Cook

Well, you won’t get any argument from me about the sentiments in this piece. I must, however, take issue with the idea that these essential characters need to be ‘disagreeable’ or ‘difficult’ or even ‘a-holes’.

It is incumbent on the challenging, outspoken, truth-telling and, in many cases, passionately curious, to work really hard at ensuring that their maverick thoughts and words are hyper carefully rationalized, articulated and supported.

The aim is to open previously closed minds, gain consensus, successfully cut through the accepted status quo and create advocacy for potentially winning new directions. In other words, the toughest but most important thing for mavericks is to become ‘agreeable’ without losing their spirit, integrity and valuable contribution.
